The four cost drivers
Chip family: a simple 125 kHz or NTAG chip costs a fraction of an encrypted DESFire chip. Card body: paper is cheapest, recycled PVC mid-range, wood, leather and metal above that. Decoration: single-colour engraving is inexpensive; foil, embossing and multi-pass UV add process steps. Volume: unit cost drops sharply as quantities rise.
Encoding and sequencing add a small per-card cost but remove hours of front-office work, so they usually pay for themselves immediately.
Compare annual spend, not unit price
A card that survives twice as long halves your reissue volume. When comparing a cheap printed card against an engraved wooden card, model the annual reorder quantity — the durable card frequently wins on total cost while presenting far better.
